10 Reasons Why You Should Get a Master’s Degree

Nice one, so you are considering a Master’s Degree and looking to convince yourself that it is worth it, we might have something for you here.

1. You can finally put “Master” in front of your name and feel like a Jedi.

I don’t actually know how it feels to be a Jedi, but for a Star Wars fan, I’m sure it’s pretty awesome. Having a Master’s Degree feels like you have succeeded in the intense Jedi training and can now have your own Apprentice.

2. The students in your undergraduate classes will finally respect you.

Unless you went to Harvard with Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg, your college mates might be impressed by your shiny new Degree. But even if you did go to Harvard with them, they might be too busy changing the world to be impressed.

3. You’ll have a whole new set of excuses for not knowing things.

One of my mentors once told me that after you finish your college degree, you’ll feel like you know everything until you realize you don’t, and then you’ll decide to pursue a Master’s. Once you have a Master’s Degree and are exposed to a specific body of knowledge or problem domain, you’ll find your self doing a lot of disclaimers, phrases such as “I’m not an expert in this field” or “this is not my area of expertise.”

4. Impress your friends and family with your newfound knowledge and wisdom.

You might not get a First Class Honours, but you will definitely be exposed to the wonderful world of research, thesis, dissertations, and advanced topics such as AI or Blockchain. When you start talking about cryptography, decentralized ledgers, and cryptocurrency, Bitcoin in particular, even your ex might be impressed and would like for you to get back together.

5. You’ll have a much better chance of getting a high paying job.
While it’s not guaranteed, it doesn’t take a genius to know that someone who has a Master’s degree related to AI, cryptocurrency, quantum computing, and similar fields will likely command a high salary.

6. You’ll finally be able to use “I have a Master’s Degree” as a trump card in arguments.

If you’re young and don’t have a lot of experience, your Master’s Degree will be your greatest trump card in arguments. You might not win the argument entirely, but the fact that you have that trump card will make people around you think twice about whether you’re actually right.

7. Your diploma will make a great doorstop.

I once asked an HR Manager about the importance of having a diploma or a Master’s degree. While the response was that it’s becoming increasingly optional, hiring managers still prefer people with a Master’s degree. The self-discipline aspect of it was obvious to me, but the sociability aspect was not so much, apparently, the workplace thinks people with a Master’s degree are highly sociable.

8. You’ll be able to participate in “intellectual” conversations and pretend to know what people are talking about.

If Joey Tribbiani from Friends could do it, why not someone with a Master’s degree? No offense to Joey, but he couldn’t do it without reading more than one Encyclopedia.

9. You can finally stop pretending to like your job.

Saying “I quit” is one of the most satisfying things to say, especially when you not only hate your job but also have a terrible boss. You might still have to play nice, though, as your next company might require a reference from your previous job and boss.

10. You’ll have the opportunity to go into debt for the rest of your life.

Not a good one, but a statement of fact, and important to note unfortunately:).
