Don’t Get Duped at the Airport! Why Those Money Exchange Rates Stink

Don’t Get Duped at the Airport! Why Those Money Exchange Rates Stink

You just landed at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris after a long haul flight, tired but thrilled to start your European adventure. As you stand in line at the currency exchange booth, that wad of American dollars burning a hole in your pocket, you assume these airport kiosks offer fair rates. Unfortunately, you’d be dead wrong! Don’t make a rookie move that devastates your travel budget!

I learned this lesson the hard way when I first travelled to Australia. I was too overwhelmed navigating the airport and didn’t know better, nobody told me, I was so excited for the trip that I exchanged several hundred bucks at the first currency booth I found. Big mistake – those dismal rates and crazy fees cut my spending money down over 10% right off the bat!

I fumed once I figured out airport money changers offer the worst deals around. But by then it was too late – my precious dollars were already swapped. Here’s the inside scoop to avoid my ugly fate during your adventures abroad!

Sky-High Exchange Rate Spreads

You may see currency exchange booths right as you clear Customs promising “0% commission.” Don’t let this fool you! Airport money changers make their cash by building outrageous profit margins into exchange rates through a tactic called spread pricing.

Essentially, they set their own rate well below the current mid-market rate then obscure the details to dupe sleepy travelers. So while the transaction fee might be 0%, you’ll still get way less foreign money back due to inflated spreads. We’re talking differences of 5, 8, even over 10% compared to better options in town!

For example, the mid-market rate for British pounds when I landed at Manchester Airport last summer was about $1.25. But the airport kiosk boasted “no fees!” while using an inflated spread rate of $1.15 per pound. So for every $100 I exchanged, I was missing out on nearly $10 worth of spending money! Facts are airport currency exchanges rely on gouging uninformed tourists this way by offering horrible exchange rates. Thankfully I am much wiser now and always carry a credit card that offers 0% FX and very competitive rate. i also have a multi-currency card that allows me to buy/exchange my other currencies to GBP at a very competitive rate.

Buried Fees Galore!

And it gets worse. In addition to lackluster base rates, airport money changers often bury other surprise fees in the fine print that gnaw away at your vacation budget. Watch for extras like:

  • Commission charges per transaction that aren’t openly advertised
  • ATM withdrawal fees if getting foreign cash from onsite machines
  • Percentage or flat costs to exchange any unused foreign currency back to dollars for your return trip

A friend of mine got clobbered with a 7% reexchange fee at the Frankfurt airport that she never saw coming! By the time her Eurotrip ended, those extra costs were nearly as much as a flight home. Ouch.

How to Avoid Getting Burned

Luckily this madness is easy to sidestep armed with the right intel. You can hang onto way more vacation money by skipping airport currency exchanges altogether. Here are smarter options:

Use Your Debit Card
Hit up an ATM at your arrival airport to get local cash instead. Your bank card gives mid-market exchange rates with minimal transaction fees. Just call your bank first to confirm they don’t charge foreign transaction costs.

Swap Cash Downtown
Venture into the closest city neighborhood for way better exchange rates. Private kiosks and smaller banks need to stay competitive. This takes little extra time but saves loads of cash. I now exchange only $100 or so at airports out of necessity (For Cab if there’s no Uber or Grab in the destination), then swap the bulk of spending money downtown at fair market rates.

There you have it – the ugly truth about why airport currency exchange booths are financial tourist traps, plus alternatives to avoid getting burned. Don’t kick off a fabulous vacation by letting awful exchange rates tank your travel fund. You’ll have way more fun shopping at chic Parisian boutiques and sipping cappuccinos by the Seine if you bypass bogus airport rates upfront! Let me know if you have any other travel money questions. Now bon voyage and happy jet setting!
