Well, thrill-seekers, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve been on my fair share of haunted hayrides, ghost tours, and horror mazes. I’ve screamed my lungs out at chainsaw-wielding maniacs and run for my life from disturbing creatures lurking in the shadows. McKamey Manor – San Diego, CA

Let’s start with the horror experience so extreme it requires a 40-page waiver, a safe word, and a screening process. McKamey Manor is less of a haunted house and more of a survival horror test—a terrifying interactive experience that pushes you both mentally and physically for as long as you can last. We’re talking crawling through tunnels, getting bound and blindfolded, and extreme startles that leave most participants crying, shaking, and even vomiting from fear. The twisted mastermind behind it, Russ McKamey, has been perfecting the “show” for years, carefully choosing the most helpless victims…I mean…brave participants he can find. Make it through the whole ordeal and you’ll earn $20,000…but no one ever has.

I tried to score an invite to check this notorious freak show out myself but was denied after the screening call. Probably for the best—I get nightmares just watching the exit interviews of traumatized survivors on YouTube. But if you think you can handle it, this evil experiment in manufactured terror might be the ultimate nightmare come true. Good luck making it out in one piece!

Bennett’s Curse – Baltimore, MD

Next up is a monster-sized haunted attraction spanning 60,000 square feet with over 200 actors, amazing sets and chilling special effects. Maryland’s Bennett’s Curse consistently tops lists of the scariest haunted houses in the U.S. and is famous for not holding back on terrifying attendees. As you make your way through this immersive horror world, be prepared for things to get up close and personal with fiendish ghouls popping out when you least expect it. I’m talking eye to eye, breathing down your neck encounters that will have you screaming and sprinting for safety. My heart was racing a mile a minute!

With four nightmare-inducing attractions in one location, including the pitch-black Underworld awakened by touch and sound, this mega-haunt offers non-stop scares from start to finish. I highly recommend going with a small group, because you WILL end up clinging to each other for dear life at some point during this haunted onslaught. Bennett sure knows how to prey on our deepest fears!

ScareHouse – Pittsburgh, PA

Voted Pittsburgh’s best haunted attraction multiple years in a row, ScareHouse delivers unique high-tech scares custom calibrated to torment each visitor individually. How, you ask? By monitoring your heart rate for signs of fear! The moment you get scared, horrible creatures emerge to feed on your terror.

I wore a wrist monitor during my visit which communicated my rising panic levels to performers hidden throughout the ominous house. As my pulse quickened, more demented ghouls swarmed out to chase me through dark hiding spots I never saw coming. Talk about fear feedback! This twisted haunted house toys with your emotions, building the tension until you’re utterly freaked out from what’s around the corner.

And just when I thought it was over after escaping ScareHouse itself, an army of monsters surrounded me in the parking lot for one last ambush. I’ll never feel totally safe from ScareHouse again…although I can’t wait to go back for more customized scares!

Headless Horseman Haunted Hayrides – Ulster Park, NY

For some fresh-air frights, make a trip to New York’s Hudson Valley for the legendary one-mile hayride at Headless Horseman Haunted Attractions. Named #1 hayride in America by Hauntworld Magazine in 2018, this elaborate ride transports you deep into the woods and the clutches of terrifying tales come to life. Along the way you’ll encounter ghastly sights like sadistic dentists extracting teeth, macabre amphitheaters with disturbing shows, ghost towns harboring unseen evils, and shady cabins hiding backwoods mutants just waiting for tasty victims.

Crammed in shoulder-to-shoulder with your fellow riders under the ominous night sky, you’re powerless against the oncoming horrors that assault you continuously on both sides. Nowhere is safe from the army of scare actors and looming monstrosities attacking relentlessly. Around every bend lies a new shocking scenario aimed to make you question reality as you plunge deeper into the darkness from which there is no escape…

Blackout – Various Major Cities

Finally we come to the most extreme haunted experience ever created…an underground phenomenon so controversial it’s been banned in some cities. Blackout takes no prisoners as it subjects participants to total pitch black ordeals involving kidnapping fantasies, dirty warehouses, coffins, cages and physically demanding assaults over multiple floors and locations.

Skillfully twisted performers exploit your deepest phobias, probing your limits for up to an hour of sheer hell. I made it only 10 minutes before begging to exit, feeling traumatized yet oddly exhilarated by the intensely realistic horror.
