Think Outside the Box

Think Outside the Box

We’ve all heard the phrase “think outside the box” before. But what does it really mean? And why is it so important, especially for young people like you?

When you’re 18, the world is just opening up. You’re starting to make big decisions about your future – what to study, where to work, who to date, where to live. It’s an exciting time! But it can also feel overwhelming. There’s so much advice coming at you from every direction – parents, teachers, friends, social media. It’s hard to know what to think and who to listen to.

That’s where “thinking outside the box” comes in. The “box” is all the assumptions, conventional wisdom, and societal pressures that try to push you in a certain direction. Here are three areas where you’ll really benefit from questioning assumptions and forging your own path:

Career

So many people just blindly follow the herd when choosing a career. Your parents want you to be a doctor, lawyer or engineer because those are seen as the “safe” options. Your peers are obsessed with starting tech companies or becoming influencers and YouTubers. But what do YOU want? What lights you up inside? The world needs original thinkers who are driven by passion, not just a paycheck or other people’s approval. Be open to career paths that are unconventional or emerging. Life is too short to be bored by your job every day!

Relationships

Romantic relationships are filled with assumptions, many of them outdated. Like who should make the first move, who pays for dates, how fast things should progress. There are so many unwritten “rules” that try to box you in. But not everyone wants the classics roses-and-chocolates dating style. Embrace what makes you and your partner unique. Communicate openly about both of your needs and boundaries. Design a partnership that allows each of you to thrive in your own way.

Living Situation

After high school, it’s just expected that you’ll go straight to college dorms or rent an apartment. But there are so many lifestyle options out there waiting to be explored! What about subletting a room in a communal house to meet interesting new people? Trying out van life and travelling around your country for a year? Moving abroad to fully immerse yourself in a new culture and language? Living on a sailboat or farm through WWOOF? The point is, you get to create your life adventure on your own terms.

The common theme is listening to your inner voice. Being curious and open. Not accepting something just because “that’s how it’s always been done.” You might end up deciding that the conventional path is right for you. But don’t just blindly assume. Question cultural assumptions. Have reasons that truly resonate with your values and interests.

It can take courage to go against the herd, but it’s so worth it. Steve Jobs dropped out of college because he knew it wasn’t for him. Scientists told Einstein his theories made no sense. Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime, now his work is worth millions. There will always be critics and naysayers. But following your inner compass, even when others don’t understand, is how you thrive.

Here are a few tips for thinking outside the box:

  • Question all advice and conventional wisdom you hear. Ask yourself “but why?” Get to the root.
  • Surround yourself with original thinkers who inspire you.
  • Travel to expand your perspectives.
  • Read books and listen to podcasts outside your usual interests.
  • Doodle and mind-map to visualize problems from new angles.
  • Don’t be afraid to fail or look silly – you’re not supposed to have it all figured out yet!

The late teens and early 20s are for exploring, making mistakes, finding what sparks you. You get to create your own unconventional life, not just follow the herd. So be bold. Think for yourself. Get excited about your own weird ideas. Value curiosity and originality. The world needs more people who think outside the box.

The assumptions and formulas handed to you are just templates, but your life is a unique masterpiece. Don’t be afraid to throw out conventions and paint outside the lines. Some of the greatest joys and growth come from questioning assumptions and thinking differently. When you walk your own path, not only do you thrive – you light the way for others.

Now put down this blog and daydream a little…what does your ideal life look like? Not what you’re “supposed” to do, but what makes YOU come alive? Get creative! There are infinite possibilities. Think outside the box.
